Huawei Watch GT 4 – What’s New?

Nothing much has changed when compared to its predecessor, the GT 4 still has a spherical shape and is equipped with a microphone and speaker. It can also track all your daily activities.

  • However, according to Huawei, the GT 4 features the TruSeen 5.5 algorithm that enables improved heart rate tracking.
  • Furthermore, like the GT 3, the GT 4 also utilizes both L1 and L5 signals to deliver accurate route mapping. Moreover, it uses an enhanced Satellite antenna array to improve route mapping accuracy.

Beyond these two additions, every other feature seems to be the same. So let’s that a look at the differences between the 41mm and 46mm units of the Huawei Watch GT 4.

  • Design
  • Starting with the design, both the 41 and 46mm units are durably built. Both units have stainless steel frames with an unspecified glass material which I believe is likely Corning Gorilla or Sapphire glass.

However, considering its smaller size, the 41mm unit is more compact and weighs 11g less than the 46mm unit which weighs 48g (excluding straps). At 46mm, the 46mm unit isn’t too bulky nor is it too heavy, it’s just about the same size and weight as many other competitors like Ticwatch Pro 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, however, the 41mm unit is more comfortable to wear.

Taking a closer look at both units, you will notice that the 46mm unit has a larger bezel with decimal numbers engraved on it. This certainly leaves it with a bolder appearance, thus making it more masculine. In contrast, the 41mm unit has a very thin raised bezel which I think leaves it with a feminine appearance.

The strap sizes are also different, the 46mm unit has a 22mm wide strap while the 41mm has a 20mm wide strap. Huawei sells different strap materials for both sizes, the available straps for the 46mm unit are fluoroelastomer, stainless steel, leather and composite materials. Meanwhile, the 41mm straps come in Milanese stainless steel, stainless steel and leather straps. Since the straps are interchangeable, you can always change the straps with any compatible option of your choice.

Both watches are rated 5ATM which represents 50 meters waterproof rating. In other words, these two are waterproof up to 50 meters. So it’s safe to wear either unit to the shower or even the swimming pool.

Similarly, the 41mm unit comes in gold color while the straps come in different colors.

Clearly, if there is one area in which the Huawei Watch GT 4 shines, I will say it’s the outstanding design. However, a titanium frame which is now becoming a standard would have been better.

  • Display
  • The display of both the 41mm and 46mm units are powered by AMOLED, so you have a very colorful, bright, legible display that is easy to read in any light condition. Though as a result of the difference in case sizes, the display sizes also differ.

While the 46mm unit boasts a 1.43 inches display, it’s 1.32 inches for the 41mm unit. Obviously, you will see more info at a glance on a wider screen than on a smaller screen. Nonetheless, the display of the smaller 41mm unit is still very much okay. After all, the Pixel Watch 2 which also has a 41mm footprint has a 1.2 inches display.

Both watches come with preloaded watch faces, and you will have the option to download even more watch faces from the Huawei Health app which boasts of many fine watch faces.

Operating the Huawei Watch GT 4 is also very easy, you get a touch-sensitive display alongside a rotating crown and a side button.

  • Battery Life
  • Another difference between the 41mm and 46mm units of the Huawei Watch GT 4 is the battery life. The price to pay for a bigger case size is a bigger battery capacity which means longer battery life. This is also similar in the case of the Galaxy Watch 6 (40mm) and (44mm) units.
Huawei didn’t specify the battery capacities of the different sizes, however, the company claims the 46mm unit can go up to 14 days in low usage scenarios and up to 8 days in regular usage. Meanwhile, it’s up 4 days with always-on enabled.

In contrast, the 41mm unit can last up to 7 days in typical usage and up to 4 days with heavy usage, while it’s up to 48 hours with always-on enabled.

So, the 46mm unit has twice the battery life of the 41mm unit. This obviously makes it a better choice for hikers.

Huawei Watch GT 4 (41mm) vs (46mm) Prices

The price of the 46mm unit of the Huawei Watch GT 4 starts from £230 and goes up to £300. The price is dependent on the selected straps. With the fluoroelastomer strap, the price is £230, and when paired with the woven composite or leather strap, it’s £250. Meanwhile, the 46mm unit with stainless steel strap has a £300 price tag.

On the other hand, it’s £250 for the 41mm unit with the Milanese strap, and when paired with leather straps, it’s £230. Meanwhile, with a stainless steel strap, it’s £350.

As you can see, though the 41mm unit is smaller and has a shorter battery life, it doesn’t make it cheaper. Instead, the 41mm unit with a stainless-steel strap has the highest price tag. I think this higher price tag can be attributed to the more adorable appearance of the 41mm unit.

41mm or 46mm? Which Size is Right For You?

Beyond the difference in display size, case size and battery life, the 41 and 46mm units share very similar features. The essence of making two different sizes is to give you the consumer the option to choose your preferred size. This is bearing in mind that we all have different wrist sizes.

In my opinion, the 46mm unit looks masculine while the 41mm unit looks feminine. Moreover, I honestly think the 41mm unit is more attractive.

If you are not bothered about the appearance, then the best way to determine what size is best for you is to measure the width of your wrist using a meter rule and then compare it with the two sizes.

Say, for instance, my wrist size measures 47mm, I will settle with the 46mm unit, and considering that I am a male, I will definitely choose the 46mm unit.

It’s up to you to decide what fits best on your wrist but it’s important to factor in the size of your wrist as well as the appearance of the watch.
