Description

Apple Watch Ultra 2 – Full Smartwatch Specifications – Apple at their customary annual September event announced the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9. While the Ultra 2 succeeds the Ultra that debuted in 2022, the Series 9 which is the ninth edition succeeds the Series 8. The Apple Watch Ultra 2 has the same case size and appearance as its predecessor, however, it has a 3000nits brighter display, higher 64GB storage, and a newer S9 chip that boasts better performance.

Interestingly, inline with their mission to contribute to a safer earth, Apple is going carbon-neutral. The Ultra 2 and Series 9 including the straps are made from recycled materials that result in over 70% reduction in carbon emission.

While the Watch 9 is available in 41mm and 45mm, the Ultra 2 like its predecessor comes in only a 49mm case. The build quality is still the same as that of the Ultra. You have a titanium frame and sapphire glass – premium materials only seen on premium watches just like Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and Garmin Fenix 7X Pro. The only new thing in design is that Apple has gone carbon-neutral. The case and straps of the Ultra 2 are made from recycled materials that reduce carbon emissions by 81% – thus helping to make the earth safer. Though, henceforth, the Ultra will also be made from recycled materials.

The straps of Ultra 2 are available in three different designs. You have the alpine, trail and ocean bands. Meanwhile, the Ultra 2 just like its predecessor is only available in one color; neutral color.

Surprisingly, the Ultra 2 retails at the same $799 as it’s predecessor which means you won’t have to spend more to get the Ultra 2 unless you’re upgrading from the Ultra.

Like the Ultra, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is rated 10ATM and certified MIL-STD-810H which makes it very rugged and ready to withstand tough weather conditions outdoors.

The display size of the Ultra 2 is the same as that of its predecessor. It spots a 1.92 inches big display powered by LTPO OLED but it’s now easier to read outdoors thanks to the increased brightness. Unlike the Ultra with 2000nits, the Ultra 2 at 3000nits has the brightest display ever seen on any smartwatch. Interestingly, when you’re indoors, it can also be deemed to be as low as 1 nit which should also make it easy to read indoors.

Another significant difference between the Ultra 2 and its predecessor is that it comes with a new chipset. It is powered by a new S9 Chipset which succeeds the S8 chip that powers the Ultra and Watch 8. Alongside the S9 chip is an upgraded Ultrawide 2 chip.

The S9 chip features a four-core neural engine that enables the enhanced double-tap gesture features which will allow you to interact with the watch by simply double-tapping your index and thumb fingers. Moreover, the new S9 chip also makes Siri more responsive and powerful.

Beyond the new chip, the Ultra 2 has 64GB storage which is twice what you get on Ultra. This will allow you to download even more of your favorite tracks and podcasts to the watch.

The Ultra 2 like it’s predecessor also has a microphone and dual speakers that will allow you to make and receive calls directly from the watch. The Ultra 2 is only available in a cellular model as a result, it has an embedded SIM that enables cellular connectivity which will allow the watch to make and receive calls totally independent of your phone. Moreover, because it’s a standalone watch, you will be able to stream music, reply to messages and even use mapping features without your iPhone. The supported carriers in the US are Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T.

The dual speakers on the Ultra 2 means it’s louder than what you get on the Watch 9. This louder speaker supports the siren feature on the watch that boasts up to 86dB of sound.

In the fitness tracking section, the Ultra 2 has similar health tracking features as its predecessor. It will track all your daily activities from steps, calories, stress, and blood oxygen to your heart rate. It will also track your sleep in all four stages. Moreover, it features ECG measurement and can monitor skin temperature changes – thanks to the skin temperature sensor.

Other activity tracking features include menstrual cycle tracking for women and tonnes of preloaded sports modes. The Ultra 2 like its predecessor also has an inbuilt GPS and utilizes the L1 and L5 signal to ensure greater accuracy in mapping your routes even in difficult environments.

The Ultra 2 like Ultra is also certified EN13319 which makes it dive-ready. Apple says the Ultra 2 just like the Ultra can support up to 40 meters dive activities. It has a depth app inbuilt that monitors the depth and temperature of the water.

The Ultra 2 and Watch 9 ship with WatchOS 10 out of the box. WatchOS 10 is the latest operating system for Apple watches, it succeeds the WatchOS 9 and welcomes interesting features. Apple stated that WatchOS 10 will also come to Apple Watch Series 4 and above. It will also come to the Watch SE and SE 2.

The battery life of the Ultra 2 is the same as that of its predecessor. In typical usage, it can last up to 36 hours and up to 72 hours when the battery-saver mode is activated. Like the Ultra, the Ultra 2 also supports fast charging. It takes less than an hour to fully charge the watch.
