If you find this post helpful, please share it. Thank you!

So Samsung has released the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, two smartwatches that are very similar. But what’s the difference between these two? Well, in this post, we’ll talk about the differences between the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro to make it easier for you to decide which is ideal for you.

Recall that last year, Samsung returned back to the Wear OS platform with the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic after a long spell with their proprietary Tizen OS platform. This move was obviously greeted with lots of excitement, thanks to a Wear OS platform that gave users access to more of their favorite apps.

From all indications, the Galaxy Watch 5 succeeds the Galaxy Watch 4, while the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro succeeds the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. The new smartwatches are stronger with the introduction of sapphire glass which replaces Corning Gorilla Glass DX. The new Galaxy watches also have longer battery life plus the introduction of a skin temperature sensor.

Moreover, just like their respective predecessors, both Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro are available in Bluetooth and LTE models. The difference between the two is that the LTE model is a standalone smartwatch, thanks to an embedded SIM that enables cellular capability that allows it to make calls and receive messages without a phone.

Galaxy Watch 5 vs Galax Watch 5 Pro – 7 Key Differences

Galaxy Watch 5 vs Galaxy Watch 5 Pro
Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is a better equipped smartwatch than Galaxy Watch 5

Based on available features, both Galaxy Watch 5 and 5 Pro have the same features. Each of these has a sapphire glass screen, microphone, loudspeaker, 16GB storage, and the same number of sensors that enables tracking of steps, calories, floors, heart rate, sleep, stress, blood oxygen, ECG, blood pressure, incidental fall detection, body composition, and the new skin temperature feature.

Let’s take a look at the differences between the Galaxy Watch 5 and the Watch 5 Pro.

  1. Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is available in one size while Galaxy Watch 5 is available in two sizes
  2. While the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is only available in 46mm size, the Galaxy Watch 5 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes. All sizes are available in two models, Bluetooth and LTE. The difference between the Bluetooth and LTE models is that the latter is a standalone smartwatch that can make and receive calls, and sends and receive messages without a phone. The Bluetooth model needs your phone to do this.

  3. Galaxy Watch 5 is slimmer and more compact
  4. The dimension of both watches is also different. The Galaxy Watch 5 is slightly smaller than the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro. It’s also slimmer, though the display sizes are the same. The 40mm unit of the Watch 5 is even more compact but has a 1.2 inches display size. Nonetheless, at 46.5g (excluding straps), the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is still very lightweight, it shouldn’t weigh you down.

  5. Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a more durable titanium case
  6. Although both watches have a sapphire glass screen which is highly resistant to scratches, the case material is different. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a titanium case compared to the armor aluminum of the Galaxy Watch 5 just like the Galaxy Watch 4 which also has an armor aluminum case.

  7. Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a longer battery life
  8. The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a longer battery life than the Galaxy Watch 5, and this is because it has a bigger battery capacity, thanks to its slightly bigger case size. Samsung claims you can get up to 80hrs with the Watch 5 Pro and about 50hrs with the Galaxy Watch 5.

  9. Available colors differ
  10. The available colors are different. The 40mm Galaxy Watch is available in 3 colors, pink-gold, silver, and black. Similarly, the 44mm unit is available in 3 colors, blue, silver, and black.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is available in 2 colors, gray and black. Moreover, there is also a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro Golf edition that can help golf lovers get even more from a watch.

  11. Galaxy Watch 5 Pro features route workout with turn-by-turn navigation
  12. Samsung with the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is obviously making an attempt to get a share of the outdoor running watch market which Garmin currently dominates.

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro features a route workout that allows you to add your GPX file formats which will allow you to easily follow your routes directly from the watch. It also features tracback that can help you navigate back to your destination as well as turn-by-turn navigation that gives you voice guidance as you approach your next turn. In other words, the Watch 5 Pro is an outdoor running GPS smartwatch while the Galaxy Watch 5 is your regular lifestyle smartwatch.

  13. Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is priced higher

As a result of the stronger titanium build, longer battery life, and additional route workout features, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro cost $150 more.

In summary, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro has a more durable build, longer battery life, and features route workout and navigational features that can improve your outdoor workout experience. Thus, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro cost $150 more than the Galaxy Watch 5.

Galaxy Watch 4 vs Galax Watch 5

Galaxy Watch 4 vs Galaxy Watch 5

There is no doubt that the Galaxy Watch 4 is one of the best smartwatches, and in fact for me, the best smartwatch for Android phone users. It’s incredibly slim, lightweight and very compact. Yet, it packs a lot of features that will amaze even tech freeks. Its successor builds on that and as well comes with new features which include a longer battery life plus fast charging, a stronger screen, and a skin temperature sensor.

The most interesting thing for me is that the older Galaxy Watch 4 will be getting the One UI 4.5 update. This interface brings a qwerty keyboard, more watch face customizable features, and a host of other interesting features.

So if you already own the Galaxy Watch 4, the only reason to upgrade is if you want a stronger and highly resistant to scratch glass, longer battery life, and the ability to measure your temperature.

Galaxy Watch 4 Classic vs Galax Watch 5 Pro

While the Galaxy Watch 5 succeeds the Galaxy Watch 4, the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is succeeded by the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

Galaxy Watch 4 Classic vs Galaxy Watch 5 Pro

The difference between the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, is that the former comes with a stronger screen and case as well as features a longer battery life with fast charging. It also features a route workout with turn-by-turn navigation that makes it a more equipped watch for outdoor workouts.

Also, Samsung has also removed the physical rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and replaced it with a digital rotating bezel. The digital rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch 4 was obstructive, but I found the physical rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic very helpful. It made navigation way faster. Although, the removal of the physical rotating bezel on the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro makes it slightly slimmer despite having a bigger battery capacity.

I’m glad about the fast charging feature, it was sometimes frustrating to wait up to 2hrs to fully charge the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

Galaxy Watch 5 or Galaxy Watch 5 Pro – Which should you take?

It all depends on you, I personally will go for the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro because I do a lot of outdoor workouts and the long battery life is something I really cherish. I get about 40hrs with the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

So, if you want a more durable build, longer battery life, and perhaps additional outdoor workout features for outdoor workout enthusiasts, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is your best bet. Though, it will cost you an additional $150. If want to be able to make calls and send messages without your phone, the LTE model cost an additional $50.

On the flip side, the Galaxy Watch 5 will likely be the more popular option, it’s cheaper, yet has a decent battery life, durable build, and loads of features except lacking route workout and premium titanium case. It’s already dubbed the best smartwatch for Android users for many awesome reasons.

The bottom line, it’s up to you to decide based on your budget. Personally, I chose the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro model because I run alot and would like to test the route workout which I will share with you guys in the future.
